We offer a wide range of nursing trainee programs, including undergraduate, graduate, residency, and nurse practitioner programs.

Nursing Affiliate Program

The VA Boston Healthcare System (HCS) is committed to providing the highest quality healthcare to veterans, pushing the boundaries of medicine through research, and training the next generation of healthcare professionals. The VA Boston HCS Nursing Affiliations Program is responsible for overseeing and implementing the education of nursing students and RN residents at the VA Boston HCS, as well as administering affiliation agreements between the VA Boston HCS and nursing education institutions. The VA Boston Healthcare System is a proud practice partner of the Northeast Region VA Nursing Alliance (NERVANA).

The Nursing Affiliate Program also oversees other nursing initiatives, such as the Northeast Region VA Nursing Alliance (NERVANA), Symposium Series: Care of the American Veteran, Education Series: Growing Up as a mentor, as well as the post-baccalaureate nursing residency trainee. program, the Transition-to-Practice RN Residency Program, and designated teaching units at the Brockton and West Roxbury campuses.

Post-Baccalaureate Nursing Residency Program (PB-RNR)

The VA Boston Healthcare System’s Post-Baccalaureate Registered Nurse Residency (PB-RNR) program was developed to improve the quality of patient care by providing additional education and support to new Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) graduates. It is a highly competitive 12-month training program that incorporates a clinical, didactic and evidence-based practice curriculum. The immediate supervisor is the program director and clinical supervision is provided by qualified preceptors; a mentor is also appointed by the program director. This training program is funded by the Office of Academic Affiliations (OAA) of the Veteran Health Administration. Upon completion, graduates are encouraged to apply for VA positions. The VA Boston Healthcare System Post-Baccalaureate Registered Nurse Residency Trainee Program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, 655 K Street NW, Suite 750, Washington, DC 20001, 202-887-6791.

Transition-to-Practice (TTP) RN Employee Residency Program

The transition from AI to practice (RNTTP) The residency program was developed to increase the retention of newly registered nurses, to assist in the transition of the newly graduated nurse from academia to practice, and to improve the quality of patient care by providing training and support supplements to the new nursing graduate. Nursing residency programs are now considered a gold standard in nursing practice. The VA Boston Healthcare System RN Transition-to-Practice Employee Residency Program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, 655 K Street NW, Suite 750, Washington, DC 20001, 202-887-6791.

Research has shown that new RN graduates who complete an RN residency program benefit from: increased organizational skills and competencies, use of evidence-based practices, improved communications, reduced staff turnover, leadership, and positive “socialization” with d other professionals.

Adult Geriatrics Nurse Practitioner Program

Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Residency Program

The Psychiatry and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Residency Program (PMH-NPRP) is in partnership with the Boston College Connell School of Nursing. The VA Boston Healthcare System (BHS) and the Connell School of Nursing support evidence-based nursing education, research, and practice. Together, we foster a learning environment conducive to academic, professional and personal success.

The PMH-NPRP is designed to provide clinical and academic experiences for newly graduated Mental Health and Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) transitioning into the professional role of PMHNP. The program prepares nurse practitioners for professional leadership, education, and research in practice.
